Refrigerated Cargo Market: More Than a Niche in the Maritime Shipping Business

Our Guest Lecturer was Cassia Bömer Galvão, Ph.D.
Cassia Bömer Galvão is an Economist and Social Scientist by training. Her research encompasses Maritime Policy and Management. She was a Fulbright Scholar and worked in the private sector for 10+ years for multinational maritime logistics companies. Her research utilizes qualitative data, applying techniques of content analysis and multi-method analysis, including interdisciplinary studies supported by an extensive network of collaborators.
Her published research covers topics in Port Governance, Port Development, and Shipping Markets, including specialized issues in wind energy, refrigerated cargo and cruise markets. Presently she is working on several projects related to the Blue Economy focused on Port-City Relationship; Green and Sustainable shipping; ports sustainability and ESG; Stakeholder Management; including cutting-edge themes in Automation, Digitalization and Decarbonization of the maritime industry.
She is a Guest Editor for the Transport Policy Case Studies Journal and a peer reviewer in top-ranked journals in the Maritime Policy and Management domain. She has 15+ years in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the Maritime Business domain. She served as senior personnel at the TAMUG NSF REU Program (OceanUS). She serves at the NASEM/TRB (Transportation Research Board) Committees for Ports and Channels and Marine Environment and served at the IAME (International Association of Maritime Economists) Secretariat (2019-2021).

ABOUT THE MASTERCLASSES

SUMMARY
 
As per the UNCTAD Review of Maritime Transport (2022), nearly 90% of all global volume of goods is transported by sea. The volume of perishable goods in seaborne trade represents about 15% of the total global trade in volume and its increasing average, for the period of 2010-2020, is of 3% per year in a CAGR. As such, it is considered a niche market in shipping or a market within a market. This MasterClass was designed to provide information on the basic components of the reefer market in global maritime shipping as well as business insights for those looking to explore new business opportunities in maritime shipping. 
Within the context of refrigerate cargo maritime transport market, the attendees were able to: i) define the market elements that are unique to reefer cargo; ii) understand the role of the main actors in this market; iii) describe the main technological advancements in the transport of reefer cargo; and iv) recognize possible business opportunities for new and existing customers.
 
 
 
This MasterClass took place online via CiscoWebex on 01 June 2023, at 1400 -1600 Lisbon | London time (0800 Texas Time).
