Wind Propulsion and the Shipping Industry Decarbonisation
GUEST LECTURER

Our Guest Lecturer was Gavin Allwright.
Gavin Allwright is the Secretary General of the International Windship Association (IWSA). Established in 2014, this grouping of over 150 maritime wind propulsion companies, industry adopters and scientific stakeholders is working to promote and facilitate the uptake of wind propulsion solutions in commercial shipping. Alongside his work as association secretary, he also leads the policy work stream, requiring regular attendance at the International Maritime Organisation, where IWSA has consultative status, the European Sustainable Shipping Forum, IRENA’s Coalition for Action and numerous reference groups and advisory committees focused on decarbonisation in shipping.
Gavin has presented at over 200 international fora and he was also the coordinator for the ground-breaking ‘Ambition 1.5C: Global Shipping’s Action Plan’ summit at COP23 in Bonn in 2017. His work extends to being a non-executive board member for the World Wind Energy Association, a work package leader on the EU Interreg Wind Assist Ship Propulsion and advisor on various other shipping decarbonisation projects. He is also a regular guest lecturer at the UN World Maritime University in Malmo, Sweden among others.
Gavin holds a Masters degree in Sustainable Development, specialising in small scale sustainable shipping and logistics in developing countries. He has contributed to numerous studies, projects, books and articles on alternative propulsion solutions and helped coordinate and contributed to the UN-affiliated IRENA technical brief – Renewable Energy Options in Shipping and more recently was an expert reviewer for the IPCC special report on 1.5C climate change.

SUMMARY

At the heart of this MasterClass was the concept that shipping is uniquely placed to harness a direct, pure zero-emissions renewable energy source that is delivered to the ship without the need to mine, refine, transport, bunker or store it onboard, all free of charge for the lifetime of the ship.
We have seen a wind change in the industry over the last couple of years where it comes to the focus on the decarbonisation of shipping and that focus is only intensifying with the introduction of the revised targets coming from the IMO and tightening regional regulations too. This has gone hand-in-hand with a steady growth in commercial wind propulsion projects which is now poised to at least double installations this year up to approximately 3-4 million dwt of shipping with wind-assist systems onboard. This has implications for meeting ambitious GHG targets but also on delivering that with a technology basket that not only pays for itself but also has the potential to release the funds required to cover the entire decarbonisation of the sector, or the equivalent carbon emissions of South America.
This MasterClass focused on four main areas, firstly providing a broad overview of the wind propulsion technologies themselves and delivering a snapshot of the current market situation, forecasts for the coming 12 months and longer estimates of market expansion. It investigated the potential for wind propulsion to be a key facilitator for the full decarbonisation of the shipping industry both in the near and longer term.
The analysis of the market and regulatory drivers and barriers to the uptake of wind propulsion were also discussed with insights from our work as a consultative status organisation at the IMO and the work we are doing as part of the EU European Sustainable Shipping Forum. There were comparisons with other transport and energy sectors in terms of growth trajectory and deployment and insights garnered from our recent industry and policy maker surveys.
Finally, there was a focus on the trends emerging in the sector, the potential for primary wind vessels that we will be seeing coming into the market in 2024/25 and the development of fully wind powered vessels and energy harvesting potential, rendering a vision of a potential paradigm shift in shipping for the 2050s and beyond.

The MasterClass took place online via CiscoWebex on 21 February 2024 at 1500 - 1700 Lisbon | London time. It was taught in English.
