OVERVIEW

Maritime transport is the backbone of international trade and the global economy, responsible for about 80% of the goods traded internationally. To carry these goods, numerous merchant ships of different types and sizes ply the four corners of the ocean, calling at a wide variety of ports, some located in remote areas of the globe. These ships, owned or chartered, are operated in the tramp and liner trades, depending on the cargo carried. To move the goods mentioned above, they need to follow many trade routes, some primary and others secondary. Together, these routes create an immense network of flows so that individuals and companies can access the goods they need.
However, the carriage of goods by sea is not straightforward. Depending on the loading and discharging ports’ locations, ships must overcome numerous barriers of different nature, one of which is land masses, which force ships going through maritime chokepoints to shorten their distance. Moreover, depending on the time of the year, they are subject to weather and sea conditions that affect their speed and safety, thus delaying maritime ventures and the productivity of each ship.
To understand how to overcome these barriers, at a moment when so much attention is drawn to maritime decarbonisation, this Course focused on maritime geography. While some claim that maritime geography concerns the seas’ spatial arrangement, resources, and boundaries, there is no clear definition of maritime geography. Despite this, the different worldwide curricula are consensual in what concerns the topics to be addressed under maritime geography. Such a consensual approach suggests that maritime geography is an area of study that picks up the relevant information from the different scientific areas to help with voyage negotiation, planning and execution, contributing to the success of the shipping activities. More than ever, the study of maritime geography is instrumental in shaping maritime trade and economic development.
Therefore, this Short Course enabled its participants to understand the marine environment and acquire physical and trade geography, cartography, oceanography, and meteorology knowledge to streamline shipping operations.
Covered Topics included: Continents and Water Masses. Navigation concepts. Tides. Currents and Tidal Streams. Meteorology. Geography of Trade. Maritime Chokepoints. Measurement of Time at Sea. Voyage Planning.

The Short Course took place online via CiscoWebex on 31 January - 01 February, 2024 at 1500-1800 Lisbon | London time. It lasted 6 hours and was taught in English.
