Shipping Business (Online Live Training & In-Class Programme)
 Overview
Apart from being the oldest mode of transport, shipping is responsible for the carriage of about 75-80% of world trade. Without it, the internationalisation and globalisation of the worldwide economies could not have been achieved since the intercontinental trade of raw materials, and the import/export of manufactured / fresh goods would simply not be possible. Over the years, the industry has grown and evolved to meet the changing needs of the economy. Today more than 50,000 merchant vessels, some more technologically advanced than others, registered in over 150 nations and manned by over a million seafarers, ply the oceans. From an economic perspective, shipping is an economic activity with a strong multiplier effect due to the numerous ancillary activities that are needed to perform a simple carriage of goods. As a result, many countries have been devoting strong efforts to understand and promote an industry that more often than not, is not visible in the eye of the public and to devise policies, which positively contribute to their balance of payments.
The objective of this Course is to provide Participants with a practical understanding of the shipping business as a whole and of its inherent peculiarities which constrain the activity, but which constitute the driver that moves the industry into the future in a sustainable manner. Particular attention will be drawn to the shipping markets and the economics rationale that sustain their operations. At the end of this Course, Participants will be able to:
* Understand the economic and regulatory environment in which the shipping industry operates;
* Identify the different types of ships available to carry the goods;
* Be acquainted with ship management issues;
* Identify the different market players and be aware of their role in this industry;
* Understand the different markets structures;
* Learn about the maritime contractual arrangements; and
* Understand the underpinning theories and practices of the industry.
