Liner Shipping (Online Live Training & In-Class Programme)
 Overview
The advent of the steam engine promoted a change in the way shipping had been operated so far. It allowed the industry to offer scheduled and regular operations between ports since vessels stopped being dependent upon the wind as a means of propulsion. Many maritime services were established connecting the different ports of the world, and shipping companies competed against each other in the quest of getting their vessels loaded to maximum capacity. In order to avoid dumping practices, this maritime segment witnessed the establishment of conferences under which shipowners were obliged to comply with the existing rules. Numerous vessels entered the market because of market specialisation trends. However, it was the advent of the container that would cause a complete revolution in way that liner operations are managed. From port to port services, this industry has been forced to extend its operations inland to deliver door-to-door services and the range of services expanded. From a simple freight rate, today liner companies charge door-to-door/multimodal/intermodal freight rates and the planning of these operations has become more demanding and complex to meet customer needs. The liner shipping industry became a sophisticated network of regularly scheduled services, and its fleet of sophisticated containerships transport all over the world a wide variety of cargo at a low cost that no other mode of transport can offer.
The objective of this Course is to provide Participants with an understanding of the liner shipping industry so that they can plan liner services more efficiently and deliver better customer service. At the end of this Course, Participants will be able to:
* Learn about liner ships and operations;
* Understand the structure of liner shipping;
* Acknowledge the impact that containerisation has in the movement of goods;
* Understand tariff construction and pricing in liner shipping;
* Identify the different documents used in this trade;
* Plan intermodal through freight transport services; and
* Understand the underpinning theories and practices of the industry.
