Ship Operations and Management (Online Live Training & In-Class Programme)
 Overview
For many years, the management of ships were concentrated in the hands of shipowners. They took responsibility for finding the most appropriate funding schemes to buy their vessels, for contracting the adequate crews, for getting in touch with a vast array of suppliers necessary to supply their vessels with the most disparate items that range from food to machinery/deck supplies. The several economic shocks derived from the increasing price of oil that occurred in the decade of the 1970s, while highlighting the need to cut vessels' operating costs forced shipowners to subcontract the management of their ships to the so-called independent ship management companies that slowly started to proliferate in the market. This practice would be further enhanced when the market witnessed banks taking responsibility for the management of assets for which they knew nothing about and unable to sell them due to market conditions entrusted the management of their vessels to these independent ship managers. Initially, these companies took responsibility for crewing and vessels technical management but soon their services extended to other aspects of vessels’ operations such as risk management and systems, vessel accounting and procurement services, dry-docking, new building supervision and inventory of hazardous materials. In this regard, the continuous evolution of the shipping industry indicates that the outsourcing of crewing and other technical activities has become a best practice.
The objective of this Course is to provide the underpinning knowledge that contributes to improve the quality of the ship management services provided and to devise new service strategies that foster the competitiveness of the companies operating in this business area. At the end of this Course, Participants will be able to:
* Understand the importance and the scope of ship management services;
* Recognise the importance of registering and classifying vessels;
* Identify and analyse the different topics covered by ship management;
* Get acquainted with international maritime regulations and codes;
* Estimate voyage costs;
* Ensure the overall operational safety of vessels; and
* Understand the underpinning theories and practices of the industry.
