Shipping Agency (Online Live Training & In-Class Programme)
 Overview
Shipping agency is the activity performed by a designated person or company on behalf of their principals, namely shipowners, operators and/or charterers, whenever vessels call at ports. The market segmentation underlying the shipping industry promoted the existence of several categories of shipping agents, namely port agents, liner agents, and own agencies, where each of them renders specific services depending upon the shipping company they represent. Independently of the category of shipping agents mentioned above, they are responsible for ensuring that all the operations related to the vessel while in port, for instance, handling shipments, dealing with essential supplies, taking care of crew transfers, handling customs formalities related to the crew, ship, and cargo, among many others are carried out quickly and efficiently. Communication between agents and their principals becomes extremely relevant, and shipping agents are required to provide their principals with updates and reports on activities performed at the ports of call. The developments of some industry segments, as is the case of liner shipping with the advent of containerisation, have demanded that shipping agents expanded their activities into the logistics side of the maritime business enlarging the scope of their functions.
The objective of the Course is to examine in detail the ship agent’s role when vessels call at ports and to provide additional background knowledge to increase their responsiveness capacity when their principals require additional services. At the end of this Course, Participants will be able to:
* Understand how ships are regulated;
* Identify the different types of services rendered by an agent;
* Understand shipowners-agents relationships;
* Discuss contemporary issues impacting on the sector;
* Improve their competencies and professional skills;
* Acknowledge the legal aspect of the business; and
* Understand the underpinning theories and practices of the industry.
